One injured in police firing

Pokhara, June 12

An 'alleged' drug smuggler in his 30's was injured in a police firing at Pokhara today. As the police said the move was taken in defence and the injured has been admitted to the Western Regional Hospital, Pokhara.

Acting on a tip-off that Govinda Thapa, known as Jonar DK, had possessed drugs, a police squad followed him, but was forced to take the defensive act after he attacked on the team, District Police Office Kaski's spokesperson Ganesh Subedi said.

Police opened a fire below his knee. The squad confiscated a large cache of prescription-only drugs such as Norphine, Phenergan and Diazepam in DK's possession.

It is said the man had been in a jail in Qatar for four years from 2014 to 2018 on the drugs smuggling case and was also convicted in the murder case by the court in Nepal on April 15, 2018.

Assistant Sub Inspector Santosh Subedi suffered injuries to his left leg and thigh in the attack. Further investigations are going on.
