Parliamentary team monitors Myagdi jail

Galeswor, Sept 16  :A parliamentary team from Gandaki State has monitored the Myagdi District jail at Beni municipality-2, Khabara. 
The Myagdi prison having capacity to accommodate 32 inmates including 25 male and 7 female now is managing 100 inmates including 93 male and seven female. 


A team of parliamentarians headed by Deepak Thapa of Gandaki State Affairs Committee comprising Chinta Bahadur Ghale, Binod KC and Kapil Bohora monitored the physical status of the prison on Sunday. 


The team also enquired some information on the status including challenges of the prison. During the monitoring, the team had found limited physical infrastructure, inadequate rest rooms and irregular supply of drinking water as key problems facing the inmates in the prison. 


Rojendra Sharma, In-charge of Myagdi jail, shared that inmate Kamal Purja briefed the monitoring team about the needs of well-managed sportground and sports materials as well as marketing of products manufactured by jailbirds. The jailbirds also voiced their complaints that they were deprived of free legal aid.


Likewise, jail in-charge Sharma also stressed the need of spacious administrative building and maintenance of jail building and expansion of its capacity. 


Monitoring team leader Thapa said they would provide recommendations to the Gandaki State government after monitoring all 11 jails of the Gandaki state. Lately the jails in the Gandaki State have witnessed growing inflow of inmates and detainees involved in drug abuse, rape attempt and murder attempt. -
